United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has an ambition to deliver 50 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and a decarbonised power system by 2035.

Energising Britain
with offshore wind

One of the world’s leading offshore wind developers, Corio Generation is proudly headquartered in London in the United Kingdom.

We have one of the largest portfolios of offshore wind projects under development globally, standing at more than 30 GW across Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas.

In the United Kingdom, we are currently developing two major offshore wind farms totalling more than 3.5 GW – West of Orkney, off the north coast of Scotland, and Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind in the southern North Sea.

Together, these UK wind farms are expected to produce enough clean electricity to power around 3.6 million households.

In addition, Corio is a minority shareholder in two other major offshore wind projects in England: Rampion 2 off the coast of Sussex and Five Estuaries off the coast of Suffolk.

Our offshore wind projects in the UK

  • West of Orkney Windfarm

In Scotland, the West of Orkney Windfarm will be located around 30km off the west coast of Orkney and around 25km from the north Sutherland coast.

Developed jointly by Corio Generation, TotalEnergies and RIDG, the project will be one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms upon completion.

With an expected capacity of around 2 GW, and first power scheduled for 2029, the project will be capable of powering the equivalent of more than two million homes.

In October 2023, West of Orkney became the first project to submit its comprehensive offshore consent applications to Scottish Ministers under the ScotWind programme.

As well as playing a major role in the decarbonisation of the Scottish economy, the West of Orkney Windfarm will also bring significant benefits to local island and coastal communities by supporting regional education, sports and arts initiatives.

  • Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind

Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind is a 1.5 GW project located approximately 54km off the Lincolnshire coast.

Developed jointly by TotalEnergies, Corio Generation and Gulf Energy Development, the project is expected to be one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms upon completion.

The project is anticipated to generate renewable electricity equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of over 1.6 million households and will play a critical role in achieving the UK Government’s ambition to deliver 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2050.

Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind will displace the equivalent of nearly 2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year of operations through the generation of renewable electricity. This is roughly equivalent to removing over 650,000 petrol cars from the road for the duration of the project.

“The West of Orkney Windfarm is a landmark project that will make a huge contribution towards meeting the renewable energy needs of Scotland. Working with our partners, we will develop a world-leading offshore wind farm that will help decarbonise the Scottish economy and play a vital role in the growth and prosperity of local communities.”

Wider UK projects

  • Rampion 2

Rampion 2 is an extension to the 400 MW Rampion windfarm off the south coast of England and to the east of the Isle of Wight. Once completed, the Rampion 2 extension will generate enough power for approximately 1 million homes.

Corio Generation, a portfolio company of Macquarie Asset Management operating on a standalone basis, is a minority shareholder in Rampion 2, supporting RWE the principal shareholder and lead developer. This shareholding originates from an interest the UK Green Investment Bank – a predecessor to Corio Generation – held in the neighbouring 400 MW Rampion project.

  • Five Estuaries

Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm is the proposed extension to the 353 MW Galloper Offshore Wind Farm located 30km off the coast of Suffolk. Based on the generation capacity of Galloper Offshore Wind Farm, Five Estuaries could generate enough green electricity each year to power up to 380,000 average UK households.
