Attentive Energy successful in solicitation to supply 1.4 GW to New York State

Corio Generation (Corio), TotalEnergies and Rise Light & Power (Rise) are delighted to announce that New York State has selected their Attentive Energy One project for a 25-year conditional award to supply 1,404 MW of renewable electricity.

Attentive Energy One received the provisional award in the state’s 2023 competitive OREC (Offshore Renewable Energy Credits) solicitation, after a full review of its project by New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA). The consortium aims to commission this project in 2029.

NYSERDA has put an important emphasis on the local content of the proposal: as well as providing green electricity to New York, the Attentive Energy One project intends to enable the construction of a new General Electric facility to manufacture offshore wind blades and nacelles, and unlock $300 million in investments in community-focused projects across the State. It aims to in addition turn the Ravenswood gas-fueled power plant owned by New York-based electricity producer Rise, into a clean energy hub at the heart of New York City.

Eric Thumma, Head of Corio Generation’s U.S. Team, commented: “Corio specialises in harnessing the power of offshore wind for the benefit of communities around the world. We are honored that the State of New York selected Attentive Energy One, our first U.S. project and a joint venture developed together with TotalEnergies and Rise and Light Power, in this round of offshore wind contracts.

“When we decided to enter the U.S. market, we quickly identified New York as a clean energy, economic development, and offshore wind leader. We are excited to work with our partners, NYSERDA, local stakeholders and others to build a project that creates good paying jobs, invests in domestic manufacturing, revitalizes local communities, and delivers abundant clean energy to New York’s electricity consumers.”

Seabed lease OCS-A 0538 was originally secured by TotalEnergies in February 2022 during the New York Bight auction. Corio together with Rise later joined forces with TotalEnergies to develop the Attentive Energy offshore wind projects together.

The lease’s 3 GW capacity will serve two projects: Attentive Energy One, which is dedicated to deliver the awarded OREC capacity to New York State, and Attentive Energy Two, which is currently competing in New Jersey’s third OREC tender. Together, these two projects could provide green electricity to more than a million homes across both states.

Corio’s shareholding in Attentive Energy is supported by its investment partner Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board.

Commenting on Corio’s entrance into the U.S. market, CEO Jonathan Cole stated: “Corio is proud to join forces with TotalEnergies and Rise Light & Power, alongside our investment partner Ontario Teachers’, to help create new green jobs and economic opportunities for local communities along the Atlantic Coast. We are especially delighted to support the historic Ravenwood ‘Renewable Repowering’ in New York, a nation-first for offshore wind, that will help accelerate the move away from fossil fuels towards the green economy of the future.

“As one of the world’s leading offshore wind developers, Corio offers global technical expertise in project development and delivery. Entering the U.S. at this crucial time means we can support a market that is evolving and expanding on its way to becoming a future mainstay of the U.S. economy. As we look to strengthen our local presence, we are delighted to be bringing together a highly experienced American team possessing unique knowledge of the country’s renewable energy sector,” Mr Cole continued.

Earlier this month, Attentive Energy announced its response to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ third offshore wind solicitation, offering to supply New Jersey with up to 1,342 MW of clean offshore wind energy. The Attentive Energy Two project, if awarded, could power more than 600,000 homes and generate $12 billion in economic activity state-wide, further demonstrating the commitment of Corio and TotalEnergies to advancing renewable energy and forging a new local offshore wind industry on the U.S. East Coast.
